Leeds is located on the river Aire in West Yorkshire, England. It is the urban core and the administrative centre of the wider metropolitan borough of the city of Leeds. The county borough of Leeds was awarded the city status in 1893 but since 1974, the city status has been held by the wider city of Leeds district. Due to its amazing architecture and beautiful landscapes, Leeds has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
With its snazzy shops and wonderful modern architecture, Leeds has definitely transformed itself in the recent years. In spite of being modern, there are many structures that evoke the city’s Victorian splendor also. One of the most famous Victorian structures is the Leeds town hall that was designed by the architect Cuthbert Broderick. Leeds also boasts of the unforgettable Kirkstall Abbey that is located in the western outskirts of the city. This abbey is widely regarded as the one of the most complete examples of medieval architecture in Great Britain.
Popularly known as the “Knightsbridge of North”, Leeds is a haven for shopaholics. It boasts of over 1000 shops, which include Harvey Nicholls, Louis Vuitton, and other scattered state-of-the-art malls, Victorian arcades, historic buildings and Edwardian markets. For those people, who don’t like shopping, there are other places of interest as well. These include the Armley mills industrial museum and Henry Moore institute which caters to the artistic visitor. You can also visit the city’s stunning parks or even the gorgeous Nelson Mandela gardens, which are situate din the heart of the city.
Any tourist passing by Leeds should experience its’ rocking and jazzy nightlife. With wonderful restaurants, night bars and impressive night clubs, you’ll have an unforgettable night there. Leeds has a large of student population, and this is the reason that it has so many night bars, discos and clubs. Another obvious thing about Leeds is its gay bars. You’ll find handful of gay bars dotted around the calls area, which include the notorious Blayde’s. The city has some of the best hotels in the world, including the Leeds Hilton, so you’ll be spoilt for choice. However if you want to save money, then its best to opt for the Bed and Breakfast inn.
